Licensed psychologists complete a Ph.D. or Psy.D. in clinical or counseling psychology, along with extensive supervised clinical experience, including internship and postdoctoral training. They must also pass a national licensing examination as well as state-specific exams.

While several types of providers can offer therapy, licensed psychologists are uniquely trained in psychological assessment and testing. This includes evaluations such as intelligence (IQ), personality, and achievement testing used to assess cognitive functioning and emotional stability.
